Verifying spent nuclear fuel involves confirming the fuel’s identity, location, and integrity throughout its lifecycle, especially during storage and disposal. Spent nuclear fuel emits a faint ultraviolet Cerenkov light when gamma rays from fuel assemblies interact with electrons in the cooling pond water. Case Study 20 describes how Resolve Optics designed and supplies a novel UV zoom lens to enable a North American manufacturer of Digital Cherenkov Viewing Devices (DCVD) to remotely monitor spent nuclear fuel rods through 10 metres of water.
