A: Space is a truly harsh operating environment for optics and imaging systems. A key consideration when producing a space ready lens is ensuring it will withstand the vibration and shock of launch. We have invested in an in-house vibration and shock test system to enable us to qualify our lenses to the required specification. As a world leader in non-browning lenses, we are well versed in supplying optical systems able to withstand the exposure to cosmic radiation for many years and maintain good performance. Other important lens design factors to consider are the wide temperature swings, vacuum and the use of only approved materials. Without consideration during the design process any of these aspects could easily render a lens unusable in space.
