Standard off-the-shelf lenses often fail in environments which are subject to #shock and vibration. For such applications it is customary practice to source industrial ruggedized lenses custom designed and manufactured with as few moving parts as possible. For example, standard imaging lenses typically feature an adjustable iris to adjust the overall light throughput in the system by changing the f-number and size of the aperture. Repeated movement of this adjustable iris mechanism, induced by vibration or shock, can cause damage over time and result in operational failure. For industrial ruggedized imaging lenses, this iris is replaced with a fixed aperture stop.
