A custom beamsplitter for a high-speed camera

Case Study 2

This customer required an optical module that could produce eight images. Each image path had to be exactly the same length with as little light loss as possible.

The eight images were created using a series of custom designed beamsplitters to produce eight paths of exactly the same length and passing through exactly the same amount of glass.

The critical challenge with this project was the mechanical design that called for eight image planes in eight different positions. This required a three dimensional design approach using Solid Works. Because of the very tight tolerances and limited space, the 3D modelling enabled our designers to identify problems of interference quickly and resolve them.

The resulting optical module is now a key component in a high-speed camera used for ballistics testing.
